Installed directly atop the smoothed and prepared sub-base, RutGuard Geocell was installed before laying aggregate/gravel to resurface this unpaved roadway in order to hold the installed gravel in place. By filling the cells of the panel, the 12" holes or cell openings hold rock in place and counteract the weight to create a sort of mattress effect, which reduces pressure seen on the sub-base layer. In other words, the gravel is strengthened and held in place to reduce ruts, potholes, sinking, and other uneveness that is generally seen in unpaved roadways.
By filling the cells, you are achieving 3x the strength inside the cell as you are outside; the 6" panel that was installed in these photos is providing the same strength as if you were to lay 18" of gravel. This allows you to use less material and achieve more strength, leaving your roadway stronger and fresh looking for longer periods of time.
